Decades ago, financial advisors built their businesses through old-fashioned means – joining community organizations, networking with peers, and hosting seminars. While today’s financial advisors must consider all those strategies too, their marketing plans can’t end there.
The internet has ushered in a whole new world of marketing and audience-building opportunities that cannot be ignored. Well, you can ignore the internet, but you can rest assured your competitors will fill the gaps and find your potential clients where they are – online.
This is part of the reason financial advisors need to stay on top of their game and constantly be in learning mode. There’s so much to know about marketing your financial advisory business in this brave new world.
If you’re worried about getting left behind or simply want to make sure you stay on top of industry trends, listen to podcasts dedicated to helping financial advisors.
Why podcasts? They’re available on-demand and easy to consume on your way to work, at the gym, or any time you have a few minutes to spare.
To help get you started, here are my five favorite podcasts for financial advisors in growth mode.
1. Financial Advisor Success Podcast
The Financial Advisor Success Podcast is hosted by none other than Michael Kitces, an industry expert and entrepreneur who is renowned for his technical planning knowledge and innovative ideas.
Kitces tackles important concepts surrounding personal development, practice management, and advisor marketing, and he does so through his own research as well as interviews with expert guests.
It’s common for these podcast episodes to run well over an hour, but they’re worth a listen if you’re ready to take your business to the next level. You can find the Financial Advisor Success Podcast online using apps like Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or on Kitces.com.
2. Business Made Simple
Most successful businesses have an intriguing story behind them – a sequence of events that made them into the business they are.
The Business Made Simple podcast (previously known as “Building a Story Brand”) is hosted by Donald Miller and helps you tap into your own company story. Once you know who you are and how you got there, you can use that information to create a modern business plan and marketing strategy to fuel future growth. In fact, my financial advisor firm website – which generates an average of 15 high-net-worth web leads per quarter – was designed with Miller’s StoryBrand framework in mind.
To help bring the framework to life, the Business Made Simple podcast features an array of intriguing case studies along with expert interviews with digital marketing stars and authors like Rachel Hollis, Daniel Pink, and Dan Heath.
Most of the episodes hover around 30 minutes and are packed full of value and entertainment. You can listen through apps such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google and you can check out the Building a Story Brand book to learn more about their approach to marketing.
3. Smart Passive Income
The Smart Passive Income podcast is hosted by fellow San Diegan Pat Flynn – an online entrepreneur who is well-known for his online marketing skills.
While Flynn isn’t a financial advisor, he is a master when it comes to using the internet to grow a wildly successful business the right way. He doesn’t promote any slimy tactics and relies on strategies he has personally used himself to build his platform that generates over six-figures per month.
If you know you need to improve your online presence, and you’re not sure how or where to begin, this podcast is worth checking out. You can quickly choose your favorite app and subscribe to the show by visiting the Smart Passive Income podcast homepage.
4. The Perfect RIA Podcast
The Perfect RIA podcast is hosted by financial advisors Matthew Jarvis and Micah Shelansky. Their mission is to help advisors learn how to run a highly profitable practice, deliver massive value to their clients, and spend more time outside the office doing what they love.
If you’re working around the clock and struggling to develop systems and processes to grow your practice, this is the podcast for you.
The Perfect RIA podcast episodes usually run around 30 minutes. While they’ve had some fantastic guests on the show, some of the best episodes are when Matthew and Micah open up their personal playbooks and show advisors step-by-step how they can implement the strategies responsible for their own success.
Look for the show on The Perfect RIA website, or on apps like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Stitcher.
5. Experiments in Advisor Marketing
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my own podcast for financial advisors – Experiments in Advisor Marketing. I started this podcast two years ago and it regularly ranks in the Apple Top 50 in the “Marketing” genre.
I’ve covered everything from snail mail campaigns and SEO-optimized blogging to Facebook advertising and leveraging media to find clients. In each episode, I share what I did, how I did it, the results, and the exact steps advisors can follow to take action. I also highlight when things don’t work out so I can help fellow advisors avoid making the same mistakes I did.
New episodes are published monthly and are typically 30 to 45 minutes in length. If you’re a financial advisor interested in unique marketing strategies to help you reach more of your ideal clients, click here to quickly listen on your favorite podcast app.
An honorable mention goes to the Gaining Perspectives podcast, hosted by Bob Huebscher of this publication. It regularly features interviews with fund managers, investment professionals and other experts on a range of topics. Episodes are around 30 minutes in length and can be found here.
The bottom line
If you’re an advisor who doesn’t have time to read every blog post or regularly attend live events, podcasts provide a smart, efficient alternative to help you stay on top of your game. You can listen to them almost anywhere – on a plane, in the car, or while you burn off some steam at the gym.
The five podcasts I’ve listed here can help you grow in ways you don’t even know exist, but you have to tune in and take action to see results. Give them a try, and you could be on your way to building a better – and more profitable – business in no time.
