10 Lessons From 10 Years of Independence

A decade ago, AE Wealth Management was built around a belief that still holds true today: Independent advisors do their best work when they have the freedom, support, and flexibility to serve clients on their own terms. But establishing an independent business amid a changing wealth management industry comes with constant uncertainty, difficult decisions, and lessons that only experience can teach.

As AE Wealth marks its tenth anniversary, we reflect on the principles and insights that have shaped our growth over the last decade. Here are 10 lessons we have learned along the way.

Flexibility Works Best With Direction

Independent advisors should be able to serve clients according to their own convictions, rather than operating within a one-size-fits-all framework. At the same time, unlimited optionality without meaningful guidance is not a sustainable model for growth or client service.

What we have found is that advisors value a platform that combines flexibility with an informed perspective, whether in retirement income planning, investment strategy, or practice management.

Not every option will be the right fit for every advisor, but helping advisors identify the strategies and resources best aligned with their business is one of the most important roles a platform can play.

Go Before You’re Ready

There is rarely a perfect moment to take the next step in business. If we had waited for ideal conditions or complete certainty before launching AE Wealth, we would never have started at all.

The advisors who partnered with us did not expect a finished product from day one. They expected value, responsiveness, and a clear commitment to continuous improvement. That experience reinforced an important lesson that progress matters more than perfection, especially in the early stages of growth.

Too often, entrepreneurs delay meaningful action while trying to perfect every detail. In reality, momentum and execution are usually far more valuable than polish at the outset.

Trust Is Built on 2 Timelines

Advisors make a significant commitment when they build their practice on a platform. They place their clients, reputation, and long-term business growth in its hands.

Over the years, we’ve learned that trust is built on two timelines. The first is immediate: When challenges arise, advisors need a responsive partner who understands the urgency and delivers solutions quickly and effectively.

The second develops over time. Advisors are increasingly thinking beyond near-term growth to questions around succession, continuity, and the long-term value of their practice. They want to have confidence in the support they receive today as well as the vision and strategic direction that will help sustain their business for years to come.

Start With the Problem, Not the Product

The financial services industry has never lacked products or solutions. What it is often missing are solutions designed around the real challenges advisors and clients face every day. One of the first lessons we learned is that building around a product rarely creates lasting value.

The stronger approach is to begin with the advisor’s needs and work forward from there. When solutions are grounded in real operational, planning, or client-service challenges, they tend to deliver more meaningful and sustainable results. In an industry that often prioritizes novelty, the most valuable innovations are usually the ones that advisors can implement practically and confidently within their business.

Growth Will Exceed Your Imagination

One of the most rewarding lessons of the last decade has been recognizing how quickly growth can surpass your original expectations. Both our firm and some of the advisors we support have achieved levels of growth that would have been difficult to fully envision at the outset.

That experience reinforced the importance of building proactively rather than reactively. Sustainable growth requires early investments in infrastructure, talent, and operational support, not simply for the business you have today, but for the one you intend to become.

Be Transparent

Clear expectations are foundational to strong advisor relationships. The more transparent a platform is about its value proposition, service, and fee structure, the easier it becomes for advisors to focus on growing their business and serving clients.

Over the years, we’ve learned that simplicity and clarity build trust more effectively than complexity.

People, Process, Product — In That Order

Sustained growth is rarely driven by products alone. In our experience, long-term success starts with people, followed by processes, and then products.

The right people establish the culture, relationships, and service standards that advisors and clients depend on. Strong processes then create consistency and help ensure that clients’ needs remain at the center of decision-making. Only after these foundations are in place can differentiated products create lasting value.

Technology Isn’t Everything

Technology can enhance the advisor’s experience and improve efficiency, but it is not a substitute for strong relationships, sound judgment, and consistent execution. The most effective technology supports a strong business foundation instead of creating one on its own.

Caring About the Problem Is the Resolution

After 10 years, we understand that not every conflict has a clean answer. Advisors value feeling heard and supported through difficult situations. Over time, we’ve learned that genuine engagement and thoughtful communication build more trust than rushing toward incomplete answers.

As organizations grow, distractions multiply. One of the most important disciplines in business is identifying the activities that truly drive growth and maintaining focus on them, even when competing priorities emerge.

Ten years in, one lesson stands out above the rest: Lasting success is built through adaptability, strong partnerships, and a long-term commitment to serving clients well.
