The Massive Advantage This Income ETF Brings to Portfolios

Income ETF strategies have exploded in popularity in recent years. Historically, investors have looked to bond coupons to add durability to their portfolios. The explosion of ETF popularity, launches, and adoption, however, has seen some intriguing options join the fray. The Goldman Sachs Municipal Income ETF (GMUB), which hits its three-year ETF milestone next year, represents just such a strategy.

Key Takeaways:

  • Income ETFs include a variety of subtypes like municipal bond ETF GMUB.
  • GMUB’s relatively low fee and active approach make it a strong offering to meet portfolio goals.
  • The fund has provided a 3.58% 12-month trailing distribution rate as of September 30.

GMUB charges an 18 basis point fee to actively invest in municipal bonds with an aim toward offering high income. The strategy uses at least 80% of its assets to government debt from states and local governments. Up to 15%, meanwhile, can be invested in noninvestment-grade opportunities.

The fund’s managers consider macroeconomic factors while investing in individual offerings. Those managers consider structure, credit quality, and tax benefits while looking to maintain a duration between three and six years in length.

Together, that has seen the municipal income ETF offer a 3.58% 12-month trailing distribution as of September 30, per Goldman Sachs data. That also includes 3.9% standardized 30-day subsidized yields as of the same date.

Income ETF GMUB an Appealing Portfolio Addition

The strategy combines that income with exposure to muni bonds, which can help reduce a portfolio’s tax bill. Many municipal bonds are tax free, with GMUB targeting those muni bonds exempt from Federal taxes. By combining tax exemption with income, the fund can make for a very appealing addition to portfolios.

What’s more, the strategy could benefit from some tax-loss harvesting. Rising yields across the bond space have prompted some movement in investors’ bond portfolios. That may make GMUB a solid landing place for assets as the end of the year approaches. With the fund gaining more than $500 million YTD, GMUB could be one to watch in the waning weeks of 2026.
