David Tice: “The Market is Going Down”
About This Episode
With the S&P 500 hitting the lowest levels since last June, I thought it would be great to talk to Ranger Alternative about how advisors should be incorporating a hedge in clients' portfolios regardless of the market environment.
Ranger Alternative is sub-advisor to AdvisorShares' Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE). The brains behind HDGE is my guest, David Tice (senior advisor), as well as John Del Vecchio (co-portfolio manager) and Brad Lamensdorf (co-portfolio manager).
HDGE is an actively managed ETF rooted in forensic accounting and technical analysis.
About Our Guest
David Tice is a senior advisor to the Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE).
Since selling his investment management firm in 2008, David Tice pursued many interests outside the arena of public markets for more than a decade. He's the co-manager of a precious metals' equities' investment management fund that offers SMAs and a hedge fund. He's also producing an important documentary about the vulnerability of the power grid. He also currently works alongside the portfolio management team of the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (Ticker: HDGE), serving as a senior advisor.
Tice is well known for founding and managing the Prudent Bear Fund (BEARX) from 1996-2008. For the 10 years ended 12/08 when Tice sold the fund, BEARX increased in value at a 7.97% annualized rate, while the S&P 500 lost 1.38% annually.
He is also known for sponsoring the Credit Bubble & Its Aftermath on September 21, 1999 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, that was covered by the WSJ's front page the next morning. His Behind the Numbers' research report on Tyco Int'l prompted investor and regulator scrutiny that eventually caused the company to lose tens of billions in market capitalization. Tice is also known for being the driving force and financier of Soul Surfer, the inspiring movie about Bethany Hamilton, the Hawaii teen surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack.
